Symptoms of varicose veins

Heavy, tired, tensioned legs
are initial symptoms of
varicose veins.

Night time cramps may occur
in feet and calves.

Water retention in the
legs (edema).

The final stage is the
development of so-called
“open leg sores” (ulcus cruris).

A fotodocumentation expose

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are expanded, extended and snaky veins that become visible under the skin as blue or red veins.
The superficial veins of the legs are affected most frequently by this condition.

What causes varicose veins?
The main purpose of the vein system is to transport the blood to the heart against the force of gravity. Not only the heart, but also the calve muscles, play a key role in pumping blood through the veins. Whenever we move, the blood is pumped in the direction of the heart. In the veins, venous valves, which literally take on the role of valves, prevent the blood from flowing back. If blood is congested in the legs due to insufficient exercise, the veins are over expanded and overextended. The venous wall is subsequently encapsulated, causing the creation of varicose veins. Moreover, the overextension makes it impossible for the venous valve to close, which worsens the congestion of blood.

Diagnosing varicose veins
Experienced physicians used color code Doppler sonograpy (color ultrasound examinations) to determine whether the deep veins are continuous, whether the venous valves are working and in which direction the blood is flowing.
Contrast x-ray images of the veins (plebography) are taken in rare cases.

Treatment of varicose veins
The object of every therapy is to stop the porousness of the veins as early as possible.
In very severe cases, the entire altered vein is remove from the shin to the groin (varicose vein stripping). This therapy is possible only if the deep leg veins are continuous and the entire vein trunk can no longer be preserved. If the patient is suffering from mild to moderate discomfort and the large venous valves are still intact, the affected vein sections are removed through cosmetically favorable small surgical cuts into the skin.

Risk factors

Genes
The disposition to develop weak connective tissue and varicose veins as a result, is genetic.

Hormons
Female hormones (estrogen)
cause the connective tissue
to become supple.

Lack of exercise
Sedentary work
(standing or sitting) cause the
connective pump to become
inactive.

Obesity and smoking
